Building PermitsBuilding Permit Information
Building Permits are required for almost all construction. This includes new homes, garages, additions, decks, sheds over 120 square feet, windows, fences over 6 feet in height, roofing, siding, etc. A zoning permit is required for sheds 120 square feet or less and fences six feet tall or less. In addition, a building permit must be acquired for any building being moved onto a lot or any building being demolished. It is always a good idea to contact City Hall if you are unsure as to whether or not you need a building permit.
If you are hiring a contractor to do the work, they must apply for the building permit on your behalf. All contractors will be required to provide proof of their annual Minnesota Contractor’s License.
Building permit applications can be obtained at City Hall during normal business hours (7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Please allow for 4–5 business days for processing. In addition, remember to call Gopher State at (800) 252-1166 if you are going to be doing any digging.
